After initial measurements of sample signals from the Navy owned satellite dish at the NavFac, we decided to spend more effort to find an antenna that we could experiment with and use, for TV reception only.
This old antenna was removed from the microwave towers on Eastern and transported out to the NavFac for continuing experiments in receiving satellite TV. During this time period, all satellite TV was broadcasted "in the clear" meaning that none of the signals were encrypted. We mounted this antenna on a trailer so that we could swing the antenna around, looking for the most active satellite with TV programming. Once we locked on to an active TV satellite, we new we had just made new Midway history.
Not much later, the base commander came through with $15,000 for us to buy a dedicated satellite TV system. Within a few months, we had the entire island wired for cable TV.
